Former Newport News Police Officer Indicted on Federal Fraud Charges

NEWPORT NEWS — A former Newport News police officer was arrested Tuesday on federal mail and wire fraud charges, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

Steven Banks, 25, of Newport News was indicted in federal court on Jan. 16 on one count of conspiracy to commit mail and wire fraud, four counts of mail fraud and six counts of wire fraud, according to the indictment filed in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia. Banks is accused of fraudulently reloading a prepaid Visa debit card account by misusing Green Dot MoneyPak cards sold in stores that allow customers to buy set amounts of money for transfer to prepaid cards, according to the indictment.
